Reflections on Black Maternal Health Week & the Mission of Mahogany Mothers Circle

Black Maternal Health Week is more than a campaign—it’s a movement. One that honors the voices, needs, and sacred power of Black mothers and birth workers. At Mahogany Mothers Circle (MMC), we carry this purpose year-round by creating spaces that nurture, inform, and affirm our community in ways traditional systems often overlook.

Our mission is to support mothers and birth workers in communities of color by offering comprehensive wellness, postpartum, and social-emotional resources that bridge the gaps in traditional maternal care. By fostering a nurturing, inclusive environment, MMC promotes health, resilience, and empowerment for mothers and the birthworker community.

We launched Black Maternal Health Week 2025 with our first official event:
🌿 “Superfoods with Supermamas: A Healing Nutritional Blueprint” featuring the fierce and fabulous Chef Babette. She showed up as the community Auntie we all needed—wise, radiant, and full of love and straight talk. We talked about more than food—we talked about nourishing our whole selves, body and soul.

During the Q&A, I felt moved to say:

“There’s no such thing as a bad question. Every question is a doorway to deeper understanding. If you're wondering about it, chances are someone else is too—so speak up! Your curiosity is powerful.”

We left feeling seen, nourished, and empowered.

And in the most divine alignment—later that very night, one of our Mahogany Mamas gave birth to a beautiful baby boy at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The same hospital where I brought my own children into this world. What a powerful reminder that this is not just about conversations or concepts. This is real, life-bringing, soul-affirming work.

The next day, Teresa Johnson joined us to talk about legacy planning. She helped us understand the importance of preparing for the inevitable—how the way we organize our digital assets, intellectual property, and personal wishes reflects the depth of our care for those we’ll one day leave behind. It was real. It was eye-opening. It was necessary.

At MMC, we believe in showing up for mamas in all seasons—before, during, and after birth. And we’re just getting started!
