Preserving Our Legacy, Creating Our Future: Reflections from the Saving Places Conference

Two weeks ago, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Colorado Preservation Institute Saving Places Conference, an experience that deepened my understanding of historic preservation, community engagement, and cultural resilience. The sessions I attended covered a wide range of topics, from peacemaking in communities to the hidden histories of Native American and Japanese slavery in America, as well as strategies for adaptive reuse of landmark buildings, financing historical projects, and authentically engaging communities.
One of the most impactful moments of the conference was meeting Hon. Judge Gary Jackson, whose deep ties to Lincoln Hills and the Black history of Colorado resonated profoundly with me. During his presentation, he shared the story of his family’s connection to Lincoln Hills, a rare sanctuary for Black Coloradans during segregation—a space where families could gather, rest, and find joy despite the systemic barriers of the time. Judge Jackson also reflected on his close relationship with my late cousin, Civil Rights lawyer Irving Andrews, who dedicated his life to justice and whose Denver home was recently designated as a historic landmark on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Self- Awareness Workshop Series
This conference was a powerful reminder of why spaces like Mahogany House are essential today. Much like Lincoln Hills once provided a retreat for our ancestors, Mahogany House is growing into a sanctuary where Black and Brown families can find healing, support, and connection. Our Self-Awareness Workshops are in full swing, and there’s still time to join! These workshops are designed to foster self-discovery, emotional well-being, and empowerment, creating a strong foundation for individuals and families to thrive.

Looking ahead, we are expanding our vision. One of our long-term goals is to host meal interviews—intimate gatherings where families and potential doulas or midwives can connect over shared meals, allowing parents to choose the right birth support team for their journey. We are also working to financially support our clients' doula and midwifery care, ensuring that every family has access to the culturally competent and compassionate care they deserve.
The connections I made at the conference reaffirmed that preserving history and creating safe spaces go hand in hand. Through Mahogany House and future collaborations with Lincoln Hills and beyond, we are bridging the past and the present—honoring our ancestors while actively shaping the future for the next generation.
